Thinking of temporarily dying my hair?

I have really thick blonde hair and I have always wondered what I would look like as a brunette, so I'm gong to temporarily dye my hair. The problem is I have no idea how to do it, or what kind of dye to get, and I hear bad things can happen if blondes dye their hair brown...is that true? An information you can give me would be great!
